Education Director with dog

Nancy Baker-Cazan, Education Director

Nancy has been a member of the Beech Creek family since its inception in 2001. She became the Education Director at Beech Creek in 2010 after retiring from a 35 year formal education career primarily in the Stark County area. Her background includes degrees in Education, Earth System Science, Environmental Science, and Outdoor Education. Nancy is an animal lover, spending a lot of time outdoors with her four amazing dogs, Marely, Jack, Skyler, and Lucky. Having a love for dogs and wildlife, she works diligently to curb her dogs’ natural tendency to chase and kill – not always successfully – while giving them plenty of outdoor activity.

Dog Yoga

Dog Yoga

10:40 - 11:25 am

Do you love yoga? Do you love relaxing in nature? Do you love your dog? Just kidding! Of course you love your dog. So why not try outdoor yoga with you dog? "Doga" is the perfect activity for pets with a calm demeanor and owners looking to connect with their furry friend in a unique way. Remember to bring a yoga mat or towel!

What is "doga" or dog yoga?

Doga combines traditional yoga and dogs to create a unique experience that allows practitioners to achieve a greater harmony and positive connection between the owner and dog. For doga beginners, the participating pup is usually only a presence, acting as a weight, block, or prop. Well-trained dogs may act as a partner, mimicking poses alongside their owners.

What are the benefits of dog yoga?

  • Can be helpful to injured dogs

  • Provides good exercise for obese or elderly dogs

  • Appeals to a dog’s natural instinct to stretch, which improves flexibility and range of motion

  • Can calm hyperactive dogs

  • Strengthens bond between owner and pet

Important note: Doga shouldn’t be forced upon a dog. Instead, owners should be mindful and try to listen to their dog’s body language. If your dog doesn’t really seem interested, or if your pooch is trying to pull away or starts squirming, your dog is telling you they've had enough and it’s time to stop and wait for another day.
