What Campers  Learn

Magnifying glass

Campers explore the varied habitats that the nature preserve has to offer and enjoy collecting & observing the many things we see and find.

Puzzle pieces

Our camp fosters teamwork, respect for one another, and the environment.

Two green leaves

Earth systems science (how everything in the environment works as a system) is at the core of our learning adventures.

Bring: Healthy lunch, water bottle, pump or lotion insect repellent (recommendations), and backpack (label all items with camper's name).

Clothing: We recommend campers wear comfortable, rugged clothes & shoes that can get muddy, or grass & dirt stained. Dress for the weather (layers are best), bring extra socks, and wear hiking boots or shoes. On water days, a change of clothing is recommended for the afternoon.

COVID-19 Modifications

We are adhering to all mandatory protocols for day camps as outlined by the state of Ohio.

Read our Reopening Plan to view a list of all the precautions in place at Beech Creek Gardens.

Theme 1 : Woodland Life

June 2-24, 2021

June 2 & 3 - Here, Birdie, Birdie!

The 2021 camp season opens with an up-close look at our beautiful feathered friends. Campers will learn some basics about Ohio birds and how to make a field identification. You will learn how to use a bird identification app called Merlin and go "birding" off-trail as you look for some of the birds that call Beech Creek Gardens home. As a special treat, Josh and his staff from Raptor Hallow Sanctuary will give you a behind-the-scenes look at their critters now living at Beech Creek Gardens. You'll have an opportunity to ask Josh about caring for rescued animals.

June 9 & 10 - Plop! Buzz! Hop! - Hello Vernal Pools!

Grab your boots and backpack - let's head to my favorite pool. No swimming allowed, but serious exploring encouraged. You will visit two of the vernal pools at Beech Creek Gardens to see what is happening. This year, we are looking for fairy shrimp, emerging toads, salamanders, and all kinds of larvae.  AMAZING!

June 16 & 17 - Butterflies & Moths

Time to check out the Beech Creek Gardens Butterfly House and find out what is new this year. Mr. Nero "Jim" and his trusty butterfly dog "Porsche" will again give us a behind-the-scenes look at our unique butterfly and moth habitat.

June 23 & 24 - Snakes

Everyone's favorite critter - or not!! Many common Ohio snakes live within the Beech Creek Gardens boundaries, and you will get a chance to try to find some.  Wildlife expert Krista will put out some traps and show you how to enjoy these critters without hurting them or you. It will be fun to see what she finds! You will also get to meet our resident snakes inside the Amazing Garden Plant Science Center.

Theme 2 : Water Life

June 30 - July 22, 2021

June 30 & July 1 - Critters in the Creek (One of our favorite days!)

Frogs, Toads, Salamanders - hurray! Campers will be engaging in the capture, study, and release of whatever water critters they can find. Please bring your camera - you'll want to remember these cool critters. Before you head home, we will make sure the special critters get back to their homes safe and sound.

July 7 & 8 - Macros,  Micros, and Crayfish! YES!

Scoop up some tiny water critters and examine them using magnifiers and microscopes.  Capture, weigh, measure and then release crayfish. Let's try to top last year's record and add to our data on crayfish.  Campers will amaze their friends with what they learn!

July 14 & 15 - Icky - Fishy!

Ichthyology is the study of fish, so today, you will explore what an ichthyologist (fish scientist) does. Miss Krista will lead you in capturing, identifying, measuring, and releasing the different fish species you find in Beech Creek. The variety may amaze you!

July 21 & 22 - Life on the Edge

One of the most exciting places outdoors is where the "edge" of one habitat meets or crosses over another habitat. Waterway edges, also known as riparian ways, are critical habitats that are very important for clean, healthy water. You will investigate insects and plants that live along the edges, plus collect and test water samples. Use a microscope to look for plants and animals in the water that are not easy to see with just your eyes. You will be amazed!

Theme 3 : Life in the Soil

July 28 - August 5, 2021

July 28 & 29 - Stream Soil

This unique habitat is home to a fantastic variety of creatures. Plus, the soil is fascinating and fun to explore. You will use microscopes, some special collecting tools, and your super scientist eyes to examine and learn about life in, on, and around the edges of the amazing Beech Creek.

August 4 & 5 - Let's "Rock"!

Beech Creek flows north, starting right here near Beech Creek Gardens, and heads toward Cleveland. The creek takes a sharp turn east before it gets to Cleveland, so its journey north is cut short. Sorry, but you could not float to the Rock Hall of Fame from here - darn! But, you could "dig" up some fascinating and fun-to-look-at rocks. You will explore the sand bars that develop along Beech Creek, collect interesting rocks, and learning a little about how the stones get carried and shaped by the water as if flows along on its journey. AND you will get your very own geode to break open and take home. Don't know what a geode is? You will be amazed - what a sparkling way to end the summer!
