The Tortoise Derby brings our resident tortoises to the “track” for a lighthearted race to the finish—complete with personalities, team names, and plenty of surprises along the way. Whether you’re cheering for the underdog or backing a fan favorite, this is your chance to be part of the action.
How It Works

Make a donation of $5 or more to back a tortoise

Choose which tortoise you’re cheering for

If your tortoise wins, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a family membership

Sully is a laid-back tortoise who comes to life around his fellow racers, bringing a quiet but contagious energy to the track. He’s happiest gazing at the trees and plants in his enclosure or hunting down the fattest worms he can find. Though he didn’t have the easiest start and lives with MBD, Sully doesn’t let it slow him down one bit.
Frankie, our red-footed tortoise, is impossible to miss with her striking red legs and commanding presence. As the largest in the group, she runs the show—making sure she’s first to the plate of greens every time. Around here, Frankie isn’t just part of the race… she’s the one everyone else is trying to beat.
Chevy is an Eastern box turtle who prefers the solo life, ruling his own space in the Amazing Gardens. Unlike the others, he’s not a fan of company—if he spots another turtle (or even a staff member), he’s quick to give chase. Around here, Chevy plays by his own rules… and everyone else just tries to keep up.
